Welcome 2020 the Decade of Your Healthiest You!
I can’t believe TODAY is the last official day of 2019! My idea of ringing in the new Decade in an Epic way is to share my favorite “Healthy Tips” to both prevent and aid in Hang over Recovery!
What I love about these healthy tips, is they apply with just more than hang over’s. These next few months are the height of cold and flu season….even feeling a bit Fatigued and or Stressed can wear down your immunity, especially when you are exposed to those not well around you.
The good news is you don’t need to live in a bubble…you can still enjoy “community” and build your “Immunity”.
I had the opporunity to share some of my favorite Healthy Tips on how to
Beat the Post Holiday and Winter Blues! Check out my tips below and my new
Anti-Inflammatory Smoothie Recipe!
It was a hit with Fox 5 DC Anchor Erin Como from “Good morning DC”.

Hangover’s and sickness can definitely throw our entire body off balance. When our blood sugar drops, when we are dehydrated, when there is too much acidity in our body we need to nourish our body to get back into alignment. That’s why it’s so important to focus on healthy food and drink to help our bodies repair and recover.
Check out my simple 3 Step Process to helping your body gently detox, recharge and recover from a night of drinking.
1.) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. The best cure for a hangover is to help your body replenish the important nutrients it’s lost. I like to call these hydration options, “hydration with benefits“, as they all have an extra dose of hydrating goodness that will inoculate your body with the vitamins and minerals you may have lost.
*Here are two of my favorite Simple Recipes I love to make when I know I need to amp up my electrolytes:
Electrolyte Chia Fresca
- 16 oz Coconut Water (Harmless Coconut)
- 4 Tbsp Chia Seeds
- 1/2 Lemon or lime Squeezed
- 2 Tablespoons Aloe Vera juice (I like George’s from Whole Foods)
- Pinch Sea Salt
Directons: Mix together in a 16/32 oz Mason Jar or favorite glass and let sit for about 30 minutes to allow the Chia Seeds to gelatinize for better water absorption.
Hot Ginger Tea
- 8 oz Hot Water
- 2-3 slices of fresh ginger
- 1 Tsp of Raw Honey
Directions: Boil Water and place in your favorite Mug. Add Ginger and lemon allowing to steep for 10 minutes. Option: Add honey for sweetener.
Note: The fructose in raw honey has been shown to help breakdown the alcohol.
2.) Refuel. Keep it Simple! Eating can tend to be a bit more difficult depending on the severity of a hangover, so you want to make sure to fuel your body with gentle, nourishing food that will support your body in naturally detoxing the alcohol. Stay away from the greasy stuff and instead choose Complex Carbs, Protein and Fats that are supportive to your body. We need to rebalance blood sugar, and add back in nutrients, electrolytes and B Vitamins. You’re liver, who does all the heavy lifting, will thank you!
*One of my favorite, simple ways to replenish those nutrients is a healthy smoothie like my new:

3.) Recharge. After a night of drinking and all the not so great side effects that go along with it, it’s a good idea to add back in the vitamins and minerals that we have lost. This will also help you recover faster, as sometimes these effects can last up to 3-4 days. Here are a few supplements I recommend to help you recharge, and rebalance your system:
A Good Multi-vitamin – I recommend taking before you start enjoying those cocktails to combat some of the depleted side effects. It’s also a good idea to take them on a regular basis to ensure you are getting important micronutrients you may not be getting from you food. Here is the one I take every day:
Activated Charcoal – This is always good to have on hand just in case you eat something that might not agree with you or your toxicity level from too many cocktails may be higher than they should be. Activated Charcoal works to bind the toxins to the charcoal to assist your body in detoxing them. This is not something to be taken on a regular basis, but every so often when needed. I like to take with a full glass of water prior to bed. Here is one I like to travel with:
Eleuthero or Siberian Ginseng – Is an herbal medicinal plant that has been used for thousands of years to help boost immunity and lower stress hormones in the body. It is not intended to be taken every day and can interact with some medications, so it’s important that you check with your Doctor first before taking. Here is one I like:
A Note about Supplements: Always check with your Doctor before taking any supplements, to ensure they will not interact with any current medication you may be on.
Dry Brushing – Dry Brushing is a great way to stimulate your lymphatic system to aid your body in flushing toxins out. It’s best to do before you shower and follow with body lotion. You want to make sure you always brush in short strokes towards your heart. When you are below your heart you are brushing upward and when you are above your heart you are brushing in a downward motion. It’s a simple practice that can make a difference when done regularly. Make sure not to brush to hard on the skin. Here is a dry brush I like to use:
I always like to focus on an ounce of prevention BEFORE enjoying a cocktail or two. When you can plan ahead the after effects tend to be a lot less severe.
Here are a couple of my favorite quick tips BEFORE you head out for a cocktail:
Prevention tips:
- Make sure to eat something with a healthy lean Protein, Fat and Fiber before drinking. Check out the recipes on my website for some ideas. Keep it simple
- Take a multi vitamin before drinking with a full glass of water
- Drink a full glass of water in between drinks
- Choose a clear liquor like a high quality/organic vodka. You can add in club soda, a heavy twist of lime and even a splash of juice if needed.
- Go easy on the drinks….know your limit and have a plan so you don’t end up in recovery mode.
- Choose a good high-quality organic Red Wine that is sulfate free over a white (which is much higher in sugar content)
Wishing you all a Happy, Healthy, Joyful 2020!
